Dad was kinda disappointed, and I was too. He makes great tomato sauce, and I was looking forward to helping him. But they all turned into dripping gunk, on the vine!
How does that happen!
Dad said a calcium deficiency will often cause tomatoes to rot on the vine- but he also said he's been composting lots of eggshells (not to mention, the fox) so calcium levels should be fine...
I asked him why they rotted then. He said our soil is slightly acidic just like it should be, and that the only reasonable explanation is the weird weather we've been having- wide fluctuations in moisture and temperature.
So the humidity spikes are probably the culprit for this tragedy.
Just goes to show that no matter how good a gardener you (or your dad) are, you are still more or less subject to the whims of nature...
And some times nature is a brutal bitch. See what she did to our poor tomatoes?
Here's their Eulogy and some pictures in memoriam.
These gentle tomatoes were planted on June 23rd in the year of 2018, and though they grew nicely at first, they were unfortunately struck down by circumstances beyond the control of their benevolent caretakers: Harold Maria and his son Alex.
As per their wishes, the earthly remains of these vegetables were recommitted to the compost pile on Tuesday September 18th, 2018.
They never got to know the joys of ripeness, or of being picked. They never got to experience the fulfillment of being boiled and turned into sauce for us to consume. They only knew the enduring struggle and fleeting joy of growing, but their life of promise was cut short by premature rot while still young on the vine. It's true only the good die young.
These tomatoes are remembered in eternal love by the still under-ripe pumpkins and watermelons, dill, thyme, basil, and a crop of carrots. The surviving vegetables will accept donations in the form of fertilizer...

Rest in Peace, our poor, dearly departed tomatoes.

"Fuck your tomatoes!" -Nature |
I'm disappointed, but dad keeps saying these things are bound to happen once in a while.
I'm just hoping that frigid bitch, Nature, doesn't decide to shit on our pumpkins too...
Off to a good start! Don't let me down. |
