Earlier today, we planted everything. Dad said we were about a month and a half late, and that we'd miss a lot of the prime growing season... But we'd still get a little something to eat out of all this.
Some of the seeds we selected- I'm really excited for the beets! |
This is what beet seeds look like! Not what I was expecting. Apparently beet seeds are actually seed clusters. According to dad, each "seed" will sprout three plants or so. |
I like the way these dwarf grey sugar snap peas look, odd colors. |
We planted: dwarf grey sugar snap peas, Cherokee wax beans, sweet snap peas, ruby queen beets, scarlet nantes carrots, sugar baby watermelons, honeydew melons, jack o' lantern pumpkins, beefsteak tomatoes, viking spinach, mixed salad greens, thyme, dill, sweet basil, lemon balm, and spearmint!
Hooray for vegetables and herbs!
We also put out a large havahart trap, but we didn't bait it. Dad said aside from some birds, animals wouldn't come raiding the vegetables until after the plants had sprouted and grown a bit, and that leaving the trap out in the area now would mean they'd be less wary later on when we actually want to catch them.

I can't wait for everything to sprout!
In fact I can't believe how excited I am about this whole thing. My dad has always had a green thumb, and the truth is I used to think that was kind of lame.
But since the scare with him being hospitalized I've realized its on me to spend more time with him, and I wanted to garden with him because that's his favorite thing- I didn't expect to actually like it too!
Now I'm beginning to understand why Dad spent so much time out there when we were kids- even if my siblings still don't seem to get it... I guess it's their loss.
